The band will be performing at the first annual 1st. Lt. Robert Bennedsen Memorial Scholarship Benefit Concert. The funds raised will be awarded to a young deserving scholarship recipient this year through the Vashon Community Scholarship Foundation. The class of 2004 has awarded a scholarship in Roberts’s memory for 2 years and we hope to make both the concert and scholarship annual events and need the community’s support to do so!
Doors open at 8:00pm and there will be a suggested donation cover of $10.00. Tom Bean (father of 04’ class member Emma Bean) and the rest of One More Mile will be rocking from 9:00pm on. It’s an all-ages show until 11 p.m., and for ages 21 and older after that. In addition to great music there will be opportunities for friends and family to share brief stories and memories of our dear friend, community servant, and hero.
One More Mile is a Vashon band that has been together for over 3 years now.
With a combined talent that has been blessed to perform on stages from the Washington Performing Art Center to the earthy feel of the old Central Tavern in Seattle’s Pioneer Square over the course of their varied careers, One More Mile is committed to putting out the best of music for all to enjoy. Still committed to roots of the blues, and branching out into some funk sounds and performing a few originals as well, they really give it their all to make for a show that is always talked about the morning after!
Their rhythm section is made up of Sam Veatch and David Salonen and they are better than ever, as these two guys have been playing together now for over 5 years. They are as tight and wonderful as any band could dream for. Lonesome Mike is still perfecting his harp sound and really puttin’ his all into his music. Jason Lollar and Tommy Bean trade licks on their guitars that get everyone excited to just BE THERE when the music is playing! They all believe that nothing should be left behind when performing, and we give it our 110% ALL!
Don’t forget your wallets and checkbooks (there will be a 50/50 raffle) and your dancing shoes! If you are unable to attend the concert but would like to contribute to the 1st. Lt. ALL-AGES ‘TIL 11pm, 21+ AFTER THAT
FREE COVER!
Poultry In Motion was formed a few years ago and hangs out at the Coop (The Society for Miscreant Musicians Music Hall on the North End of the Island) every week for rehearsal. The music swings around all kinds of styles from Country through Cajun to Rock.
Singer and multi-instrumentalist Steve Amsden (known as number one) brings his colossal knowledge of music to the group in many forms. Gib Dammonn, from the East Coast, is the drummer who has played with a number of unknown musicians from Virginia to Seattle. Bob Kueker adds his magic to the mix and Dave Lang plays accordion, fiddle, and mandolin and is known as the patriarch of the local Cajun band Rip Tide Ramblers. Wilson Abbott brings his Dobro slide sound to the group. Last and least is that odd fellow Chris Anderson. No one in the group knows what he does. He just seems to show up and stand in one of the corners with a guitar on his head.
The only thing that can really be said about Poultry is that no one, especially the group itself, knows what songs will appear when they play….
Joining Poultry for this show will be an all-star lineup of guest musicians….trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
This show is an all-ages free cover show ‘til 11pm, then 21+ after that.

Experiences such as these helped construct a vast and diverse set of harmonic & lyrical influences. Their musical foundations are firmly built on a deeply-held admiration for the styles upon which the group’s members were raised – 60’s & 70’s soul, funk, R&B, jazz, blues, and gospel

Ian Moore & The Lossy Coils
Ian Moore & The Lossy Coils
Saturday, June 15th, 9pm
The Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi
All-ages ’til 11pm, 21+ after that
$10 cover
Bob Dylan said it best: “He who is not busy being born is busy dying.” Singer, songwriter and guitarist Ian Moore lives and creates by that precept. And his new album on Justice Records, To Be Loved, vividly displays the artistic benefits of doing so.
It’s a way of living has led Moore from emerging as, at first glance, a teenage guitar prodigy in the early 1990s in his hometown of Austin, Texas to fruition as a full-blooded musical artist, now based on Vashon, whose rich and keenly intelligent compositions invoke critics’ comparisons to some of the most respected names in both classic and contemporary rock’n'roll music.
There’s a satisfaction in listening to how Moore absorbs the spectrum of music that he loves and finds inspiring and then follows his muse to places that awe, delight and touch those key, deep places within the human soul. As Harp magazine observes of Moore, “Since the early ’90s the native Texan has refused corporate molding in favor of freedom and the artistic rewards are staggering.”
It may have been Moore’s guitar talents that first won him attention. But as Tucson Weekly recently noted, “His recent albums have positioned him as one of the most soulful singer-songwriters around, and one of the most diverse.” Or as Seattle’s influential weekly The Stranger said not long ago, “Your new favorite artist has arrived.” Similar praise greeted Moore on his national debut nearly 15 years ago, because for Moore. the path and process to where he is going has always been his focus, and it has consistently made arriving at each destination that much sweeter…..
A word about this show….you all know what an amazing performer Ian Moore is and if you’ve seen his shows at the Red Bike, you know how quickly they sell out. There are only 92 tickets to this show and you can get yours through Brown Paper Tickets in advance. http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/385775
It’s going to be spectacular, so don’t be left out in the cold!
Fendershine
SATURDAY, JUNE 22ND, 8:30PM
FENDERSHINE
w/PHIL ROYAL
THE RED BICYCLE
ALL-AGES ‘TIL 11PM, 21+ AFTER THAT
FREE COVER!
Fendershine is rock and roll at the core, layered with sounds of passion, melancholy, and rebellion. What reaches the listener is magnetic, original music that stirs your soul and makes you want to stand up and shake what you got.
With their varied musical backgrounds, Fendershine’s members each supply the perfect addition to this musical alchemy.
Together they create unique compositions that bring to mind that brief time between night and day, when colors bend in the sky and anything is possible–familiar and satisfying like a greasy breakfast at your favorite diner. Fendershine’s music comes straight from the heart and will tap into yours.
Fendershine is Eric Frith (lead guitar, vocals), Rick Vanselow (guitar, vocals), Kim Thal (violin, vocals), Steve Meyer(acoustic bass), and Fletcher Andrews (drums & percussion). Their new EP, “Rise and Fendershine,” is available at Fendershine.bandcamp.com
Opening up for Fendershine will be Phil Royal.
Because Phil Royal was, at age eleven, small of stature and of only average rhetorical wit, he started strumming the guitar in a bid to be noticed by the girls. Forty one years later he is still trying to impress his wife. Although he really has no durable insight into the true nature of life or who we genuinely are to each other, he claims to have caught rare glimpses on occasions where music was involved. He is known to despair that all of these melodic and lyrical efforts are but a glorious and frivolous waste of time but, then, moments of transcendent ecstasy are otherwise hard to come by. He is thus wedded to fingerstyle six string until time stiffens his fingers and robs his mind.
This is an all-ages show until 11pm, then it’ll be 21+. Free cover!
Women’s Singer/Songwriter Showcase
FRIDAY, JUNE 28TH, 8:30pm
WOMEN’S SINGER/SONGWRITER SHOWCASE
THE RED BICYCLE BISTRO & SUSHI
ALL-AGES ‘TIL 11pm, 21+ AFTER THAT.
$10 COVER
The Red Bicycle welcomes some of our amazing Island female musicians for a night of acoustic music. Performing musicians are: Allison Shirk, Cami Lundeen, Kate MacLeod, Jamie Jackson, Maya, Dianne Krouse, Delilah Pearl, Kiki Means & Kat Eggleston.
Allison Shirk is a singer, songwriter whose style is described as being sultry and confident with a edge. Her parents would take her to sing in front of adult audiences from the time she was five. Her shyness would fade away as soon as she began singing. Allison has a distinctive voice with a slightly southern accent. Her songs take life experience and weave stories to which people can connect. She describes places and people that linger in your mind long after the song ends.
After being diagnosed with a rare, incurable liver disease, Cami Lundeen turned to songwriting as an outlet for dealing with her newfound reality. She is an alternative folk-pop singer-songwriter who lures you in with her sultry vocal, and powerful vulnerability. Cami Lundeen’s captivating voice hails from Vashon Island, Washington. Her evocative style and introspective lyrics entrance you through unforgettable melodies. Cami Lundeen’s alternative tone has a folk-pop flavor that has been compared to that of Adele, Brandi Carlile, and Dolores O’Riordan of The Cranberries. Her creative sound embodies a moodiness that harkens one back to Evanescence. Whether it be an intimate performance, as Lundeen commands her guitar alongside her husband-cajon percussionist, or fronting a full five piece band, she draws in audiences with her raw, relatable stage presence.
Kate MacLeod’s songwriting style and live performances display an unbreakable link between traditional music and cutting-edge contemporary songwriting. She has been hailed as one of the ‘Ten Acts to Watch’ by editors of the MusicHound Folk Essential Album Guide. Her songs catch the ears of the new artists, traditional singers, bluegrass musicians, celtic musicians and songwriters of many styles and have been recorded by artists from California to the Czech Republic.
Jamie Jackson is a passionate singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Seattle, Washington. She picked up her first guitar around the time she could walk – strumming to Hank Williams and old rock ‘n’ roll tunes. Over the years she has performed in a variety of bands playing guitar, bass, keys, and drums along with singing lead and backing vocals. In 2010, Jamie’s life was forever changed and her vision of the music deeply immersed in her was set free. What emerged was raw and powerful – a series of songs ranging from gut-wrenching to pure comedy. Jamie is known for her smokin’ guitar licks and has been likened to Stevie Ray Vaughan. Her powerhouse voice is a one-of-a kind soulful, smoky blend often compared to Adele, Pink and Janis Joplin. Jamie is currently working on her debut album entitled “A New Beginning” – a blend of acoustic rock, folk and blues. Her recent move to Vashon, Washington is already producing more amazing material inspired by the island’s magic and beauty.
Kat Eggleston was born in California while her parents were working on the “Gumby” show; a detail of her life that she still credits for sealing her fate as a performer. In the years since then she’s been singing and playing original and traditional music all over the U.S., Europe, and Australia, as a solo performer and in small ensembles and bands. Kat is a dextrous instrumentalist on guitar and hammered dulcimer, and a highly respected writer and interpreter of song who has recorded four well received solo cds, a duet album with Kate MacLeod, and a cd with the Irish supergroup “Bohola”. Recently she returned to her theatrical background to work with Chicago Children’s Theatre and Chicago’s Victory Gardens Theatre on two productions written by the legendary songwriter Michael P. Smith. She now makes her home in the Pacific Northwest.
Dianne Krouse is a professional jazz musician and enjoys playing lead sax, clarinet and flute in many performance groups and ensembles across the Pacific Northwest. She also plays guitar, piano and loves to sing. One of her favorite creative pastimes is songwriting and recording. She grew up in a very musical family with Irish and folk roots where every family gathering was and still is an opportunity for a jam session. She has many originals and is excited to share a few at the Women’s Singer Songwriters Showcase.
Maya has been driven towards performance out of sheer competitive envy. Incredibly self conscious as a child, she managed all the same to hold onto her childhood dream of fame and fortune. Then she grew up. She moved to Vashon with the beautiful girls whose light outshone that dream and discovered that totally regular people with awesome musical talent grow on Vashon like wildflowers and she wanted to be one of them. Maya picked up the guitar and wrote some songs and dared herself to perform whenever she could. Her band, Bread Birds, is in the process of honing those tunes along with a few others. Watch for them at Strawberry Festival this year.
Delilah Pearl brings the vocal styling of ‘30s and ‘40s jazz and swing standards to life with her alluring tone. Her voice is soulful, smoky, wide ranging and flexible, influenced by Peggy Lee, Ella, Nina and “Lady Day”. Bewitching her audience with not just her sound but her style and charming presence, Delilah Pearl is captivating. After working hard this last year with her band The Mantarays emulating her favorite classic sultry ballads, she has begun writing some hits of her own. She is delighted to share them with you A Cappella for this Women’s Showcase.
Kiki Means has been immersed in music since she was a little girl – providing lead and harmonies during shared family music since the age of 2. She states that her father, who patiently encouraged, taught and accompanied her throughout the years, is her strongest musical influence. In elementary school, she discovered her love and aptitude for the guitar under the tutelage of Darryl Redeker, island musician, who first encouraged her to “play out” after witnessing her passion for self-expression through music. Daryl was the first of many public audiences to comment on the intensity, vulnerability and vocal clarity that infuse her performances. Kiki’s wide range of covers of singers/songwriters in the style of Schuyler Fisk, Ingrid Michaelson and Gavin Degraw have been the mainstay of her repertoire until she discovered her talent for first, composition and, more recently, songwriting. You can also check out her tunes at Youtube and Myspace.

The Doors were the quintessential American rock band of the late 60s. Their unique sound which blended elements of rock, blues, jazz, psychedelia, poetry, shamanism, rebellion, and live theatre has captured the imagination of every generation. FREE COVER!
Bill Brown will be bringing his Kingbees to Vashon for return visit at the Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi this Saturday night at 8:30pm. Many folks in the Northwest are familiar with Bill’s high energy ‘rockin’ blues show that he’s been performing in the Northwest since 1986. Islanders will remember Bill from his performances at the Beer Garden during Strawberry Festival in years past.
Bill has been likened to Paul Butterfield in his use of the harmonica and his vocals have garnered many a discussion concerning his cultural background. Bill grew up in a farming area outside of Columbus Ohio, listening to his Mothers Lionel Hampton records. Later on, his tastes went to Paul Butterfield’s Blues Band. He actually learned how to play harmonica from a guitar player, Gary Watson, while hitchhiking from San Diego to Seattle in 1969. Bill was also heavily influenced by Muddy Waters, Little Walter, and Sonny Boy Williamson.
Bill’s love of this genre is evident in the players he surrounds himself with. John Gaborit toured nationally with a band called Krome Circus and Mike Stango toured Asia with a band called Cece Rider. Tony Handy toured with Rose Royce from Los Angeles; many know them from their #1 hit Car Wash. More often than not, they are joined by Jim Smiley on keyboards. Jim toured with Bill Brown from 1990 until 2003 and then went on to do solo performances….but he’s back, playing with Bill Brown full time and busy writing and arranging music for Bill’s next album of all originals!
All of these road veterans of the music business are sure to entertain you at this upcoming show at the Red Bicycle. This is an all-ages free event until 11pm, then it will be 21+ after that.

Trolls Cottage – Strawberry Festival Friday
TROLLS COTTAGE
STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL FRIDAY
JULY 19TH, 9:30PM
THE RED BICYCLE BISTRO & SUSHI
21+, I.D. REQUIRED
$10 COVER
They’re back on the Island on the hottest weekend of the year. If you think this show won’t be packed to the gills, you’re fooling yourself. Get there early and grab yourself a piece of real estate on the dance floor, the boys are back in town.
From the Northwest, the Pacific and the sunset.
Ten plus years of genre-blending music mixed with intoxicating lyrical depth. Trolls Cottage is hypnotically simplistic; music soaked in lyrical contemplations.
The Trolls Cottage sound has been defined in many ways. Some say it is semi-acoustic rock with conscious lyrics and danceable beats. Others see have seen it different light, such as in 2002, when their live album was voted to the semi-finals of the Grammy Awards, in the Best Reggae Album category. More often than not, Trolls Cottage has been described as unique, having developed a sound that makes the group stand out from the oceans of other bands. They are enjoyed by a wide range of people, especially when performing at outdoor festivals where the crowds are so diverse. The energy this band brings to a performance is exhilarating and most certainly compels the audience to get up and dance.
Self promoted tours and self-released albums have garnered the group serious attention from local and national publications such as a recent big feature in the 35th Anniversary Issue of Powder Magazine. While they have mostly stuck to larger clubs around Seattle and neighboring cities, Trolls Cottage has also completed several West Coast Tours that have included shows in British Columbia, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington and the Hawaiian Islands. Over the years Trolls Cottage has shared the stage with many international acts like Luke Dube, Gregory Isaacs, John Brown’s Body, Culture, Eek A Mouse and Clinton Fearon at local venues and festivals such as Bumbershoot, Folklife and Island Earthfair.
“Trolls Cottage is one of the most mysterious and illusive acts in the Great Northwest”
-Smart Went Crazy Productions
“The singer actually can sing, and its island-flavored rhythms are controlled yet organic…and vocalist (Bain) has a bit of Michael Franti’s urgent hush in his vocal delivery.”
-Oregon Register Guard
” Marlatt’s voice makes it sound as if there’s some wisdom behind the songs, and there is …feel good-type wisdom.”
-Oregon Register Guard
“…a special blend of tunes… perfect for a deep powder day in the trees.”
-Powder Magazine 35th Anniversary Issue
“…large number of smiling, gyrating folks on the dance floor that night… always changing, impossible to pigeonhole sound coming from the stage”
-Tacoma Weekly
“Trolls Cottage will undoubtedly win you over”
-Seattle’s Best Live Music
Trolls Cottage will perform at 9:30pm at the Red Bicycle on Festival Friday. This is a 21+ event with I.D. required. Cover charge is $10.

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL SATURDAY, JULY 20TH, 9:30pm
THE RED BICYCLE BISTRO & SUSHI
21+, I.D. REQUIRED
$10 COVER
Publish the Quest, a band with deep Vashon roots that has made a name for itself worldwide as both a musical and philanthropic force, is coming home to Vashon this weekend after several whirlwind trips around the world.
Jacob Bain, frontman for the group and also a founder of the all-Islander ensemble Trolls Cottage, grew up on Vashon and lives here now. The group plays an energetic and danceable mix of blues, rock, ska and world pop.
A passion for social and musical outreach has taken the group around the globe. Working with a nonprofit called Learn Africa, Publish the Quest has made several recent trips to Cape Verde, Zimbabwe, Mali, Poland, Portugal and Spain, where band members have played in festivals and music halls, recorded with local artists, and conducted music workshops and jam sessions with under-privileged children. On their most recent trip to Zimbabwe, this summer, the band brought along a trove of donated instruments and soccer balls to give to kids in Harare and Hatcliffe Extension, a slum just outside the city.
An impressive roster of international stars has collaborated with the band — Femi Kuti, Nneka Lucia Egbuna, Matt Chamberlain, Eyvind Kang, Radioactive, Oliver Mtukudzi and Vieux Farka Touré have joined forces with the group on recordings and in concert. A recent single, “Sodade,” was recorded with Cape Verdean vocalist Laise Sanches, with all proceeds from the sale of the song going to benefit the cause of arts education in Africa.
Bain said he has found great inspiration in working with kids and musicians in Africa — people he said had “an insatiable appetite for music.” To share the healing aspects of music with children in Africa, he said, has been a joy.
Publish the Quest’s latest album is called “Then What!?”, and Bain said he is currently working on a new album as well as a short film that will document the band’s work in Africa.
The show starts at 9:30pm Festival Saturday at Red Bicycle Bistro. 21+, I.D. required. There is a $10 cover charge.

Though Dugas was born with music in his blood just outside of Houston, TX, he didn’t start playing country music until he, along with bass player Steven Burnett, moved north. Time and distance from home led the two, who were both in the guitar-driven rock band The Religion, towards deeper roots; and Ganges was born. They found pedal steel player Randy Neil (Lucky Lawrence & the Souvenirs) and drummer Adrian Van Batenburg (Gems) and a community of musicians, fans and friends who fuel long nights and shared stories of grief and joy.

Here’s a band with that ‘nothin’ but the blues’ feel of guilty pleasure and pleasant surprise rolled into just one singular night. Is Blues supposed to be this much fun? It is for the players and it will be for you when you join this once-in-a-lifetime assembly of musicians who’ve been rode hard and put away wet. They’re dusting it off and shinin’ up nice for this rare gem of a show.
Start with singer, Parrot Man, who’s got chops for the blues, a mean guitar and he knows all the words too.
Harmonica king, Lonesome Mike, will slip you some of his own growlin’ vocals along with the swe-e-e-e-t sound of blues harp all night long, baby.
Slab blows his sax to the max, while Gib lays down the beat.
Cally Dane drives home vocals & cobalt bass and Jesse Zobie’s guitar screams the blues like a down-hearted frail.
